FAQ
The Antarctic Geospatial Information Center (AGIC) is located in the Department of Geology and Geophysics on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis, MN. Office hours are typically 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. (CST), Monday-Friday.
Geospatial information is a dataset that has reference to a place on earth. Geospatial data are used in GIS software to conduct analysis and make maps, among many other uses.
GIS is an acronym that stands for Geographic Information Systems, which is a computer system that captures, stores, analyzes, and presents data that are linked to a location on the earth. A GIS typically includes mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS, IDRISI, ERDAS Imagine) and can be used to create maps, to conduct scientific analysis, and for logistics purposes. AGIC uses GIS software daily to support the U.S. Antarctic Program.
AGIC's point of contact (POC) is Michelle LaRue, who can be reached at larue010@umn.edu or by phone at 612-626-0505.
You may also contact AGIC's director, Paul Morin, at lpaul@umn.edu or by phone at 612-626-0505.
If you are in need of immediate assistance outside of office hours, please contact Michelle LaRue at 651-983-9937 or Paul Morin at 612-978-2964.

NOTE: AGIC provides services for the U.S. Antarctic Program. Each national program is responsible for archiving and distributing their own products. Visit other Antarctic mapping programs if you are interested in other products or information: British Antarctic Survey, Australian Antarctic Division, Antarctica New Zealand, Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, or the Antarctic Secretariat.
AGIC provides maps to all United States Antarctic Program (USAP) operations, research, and education communities. Map collections that can be found here are:
► USGS scanned paper maps (including topographic maps), provided by the United States Antarctic Resource Center
► Updated USGS topographic maps, created by AGIC in 2009
► AGIC original maps (Dry Valleys Atlas, Antarctic Specially Protected Areas [ASPA], Antarctic Stations, etc.)
► Scanned Antarctic nautical charts
► Scanned American Geographical Society geologic maps
AGIC also provides on-demand maps for planning, operations, and research. Please contact Michelle LaRue (larue010@umn.edu) for details.
Maps provided by AGIC are free of charge. Any map found on this website is free for anyone to download and use.
Please contact Michelle LaRue (larue010@umn.edu) or Paul Morin (lpaul@umn.edu) for more information.

Yes! AGIC provides geospatial information, datasets, and services such as:
► USGS Trimetrogon Aerial (TMA) air photos (circa 1946-present)
• Alternate search capabilities at USGS Earth Explorer
► TMA flight line and photo centers shapefiles
► United States military camera calibration documents
► High-resolution (<5m) commercial satellite imagery (circa 2000-2009)
► Medium resolution (>15m) satellite imagery
► Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and elevation contour data, derived from ASTER satellite imagery and LiDAR
► Custom geospatial software (see our Projects page)
► GIS trouble-shooting and analysis (see our Projects page)
Please see the USGS Geographic Names Information System
AGIC provides on-demand mapping and data services year-round for USAP participants, including those deployed to Antarctica. AGIC is capable of printing and sending maps with USAP participants prior to their departure for the ice, or AGIC can also send digital files to participants, leaving printing up to the participant. If you are in need of a map and you are deployed to Antarctica, please contact Michelle LaRue (larue010@umn.edu) to have any questions answered.
Personnel from AGIC will be at McMurdo Station at varying times during the austral summer, most commonly in December and January. Please see Crary Laboratory staff for details. For more information regarding AGIC's field season in McMurdo for USAP on-ice participants, please click here.
