About Maps from AGIC

The Antarctic Geospatial Information Center has collected, scanned, organized, and archived hundreds of historic Antarctic maps, most of which have been supplied by the United States Antarctic Resource Center (USARC).  After receiving maps, AGIC has them scanned at 300 dots per inch (dpi) on a vacuum scanner at the University of Minnesota's Digital Collections Unit and the digital files are then copied to CD and stored on AGIC's server.  Students then georeference and add metadata to the digital maps.  All paper copies of maps AGIC has acquired are stored in the Borchert Map Library at the University of Minnesota.

Because many maps provided by the USARC are >20 years old, AGIC has taken on the role of reproducing replica maps of many classic USGS Antarctic map series.  The extent of each map within a series remains the same, although the base map beneath the cartography contains more recent satellite imagery (e.g., LIMA, Quickbird) and updated place names.

Finally, AGIC also produces original maps to support USAP operations and science.  These maps include recent satellite imagery as a base; some smaller-scale series contain orthorectified Quickbird imagery.  Please see AGIC's Projects page for details about how AGIC's field work contributes to the accuracy of these map series.
